Love stories are often all about timing, and that was definitely the case for Lisa and Alan. They met in the most unlikely of ways during one of the most unexpected seasons of life. After decades of living completely different lives with Alan as a gastroenterologist commuting between Newton and Providence, and Lisa serving 24 years in the Air Force before continuing her career as a government civilian at Hanscom Air Force Base, their paths crossed while walking their goldendoodles on an ordinary afternoon during the pandemic. What began as a chance conversation while walking their dogs slowly became months of shared walks, longer conversations, and eventually a love neither of them saw coming. Now, this beautiful couple has started their next chapter together with their romantic Willowdale Estate wedding.

Leading up to their wedding they told me, “we’ve known each other for 4 1/2 years and knew we wanted to be together after 9 months of dog walking.” When I asked them when they knew they found the one, Lisa shared with me that she knew when she never wanted their walks to end. Alan said he knew Lisa was the one when he realized he would “re-order my whole life so that I wouldn’t lose her.”

It’s easy to understand why Lisa and Alan fell in love with Willowdale Estate. They first discovered the venue while scrolling through wedding inspiration online. When visiting this Topsfield, MA wedding venue, they knew they had found the place where they wanted to begin this next chapter together before the tour had even ended.

Nestled within Bradley Palmer State Park, Willowdale Estate has a way of feeling both elegant and intimate. I love the historic stone mansion, romantic garden courtyard, woodland boardwalk, and iconic Sperry tent for receptions. One of my favorite locations for portraits is the peaceful boardwalk along the Ipswich River, and it couldn’t have been a more meaningful setting for Lisa and Alan’s first look.

Intentional Wedding Details

One of my favorite things about this wedding was how incredibly intentional every detail was. Lisa poured so much heart into designing a day that felt personal to the two of them, and it showed from the very first piece of stationery.

Their invitation suite was honestly one of my favorites I’ve ever photographed. Soft blue envelopes paired beautifully with crisp white invitations, while a custom venue illustration of Willowdale Estate appeared both on the envelope liner and their save-the-date. Every piece felt timeless, refined, and set the tone for the romantic atmosphere guests would experience throughout the day.

This wedding was made even more special by working alongside one of my favorite vendors, Lindsay of The Boston Bridal Stylist. Lisa’s timeless bridal look and Suzanne Neville wedding dress perfectly complemented the elegance of the day and the historic beauty of Willowdale Estate.

Thoughtful Details That Told Their Story

Inspired by the warmth of the Italian countryside, they filled the courtyard with glowing bistro lights and added delicate twinkle lights throughout the Sperry tent. Spring-inspired florals brought soft color to every table, creating a joyful atmosphere that perfectly complemented the natural beauty of Willowdale Estate.

The personal touches continued throughout the celebration with signature cocktails that honored their beloved goldendoodles, Ruby and Tucker. The cocktails were featured with custom illustrations of each dog that immediately made guests smile. Their menu cards featured cardinals and white-tailed deer, subtle nods to the meaningful proposal weekend at Cliff House in Maine. They also thoughtfully honored family members who couldn’t be with them by displaying treasured family photographs throughout the celebration.

Lisa and Alan envisioned a joyful wedding that centered on love, laughter, family, and connection. Their vision came to life so effortlessly. There was such an ease between them, as they laughed together, shared quiet glances, and stole little moments together.
